What If It Rains on a Missoula River Adventure?

At Zoo Town Surfers, our river adventures happen rain or shine! We believe that a little drizzle should never stop you from enjoying the thrill of rafting or kayaking. The only time we cancel a trip is when a major thunder or lightning storm is in the forecast, as your safety is our top priority. Should a cancellation occur, you’re welcome to visit Crystal Springs, our headquarters located just 10 minutes from the Alberton Gorge put-in and take-out point. Our Crystal Springs facility offers a comfortable space to relax, enjoy refreshments, and plan your next adventure while the skies clear.

What Should I Wear?

Proper attire makes your river adventure even more enjoyable. Here’s a quick checklist to help you prepare:

  • Footwear: Tennis shoes or river sandals are ideal.
  • Head Protection: A hat to shield you from the sun.
  • Sun Protection: Sunscreen to keep you safe from harmful UV rays.
  • Apparel: A nylon, poly, or fleece shirt—avoid cotton as it gets wet and holds water.
  • Swimwear: A bathing suit for those splashes.
  • Accessories: Sunglasses with straps to ensure they stay in place.
  • Change of Clothes: Dry clothes for after your adventure to keep you comfortable.

Do I Need Any Kayak Experience Prior to Taking a Zoo Town Surfer Class or Lesson?

Not at all! Whether you are a complete beginner or a seasoned paddler looking to refine your skills, our classes cater to all levels. Our expert instructors are passionate about teaching and ensure that every participant gets personalized guidance. From learning basic techniques to mastering advanced freestyle moves, you’ll be in good hands with the best kayaking instructors in the Missoula Valley.

Can We Bring Our Dog?

We love pets, but for the safety and comfort of all our guests, dogs are not allowed in the rafts. However, we do have a shaded kennel facility at Crystal Springs if you wish to have your furry friend nearby. Still, if it’s an option, we recommend leaving your pet at home. If you do plan on bringing a dog, please inform us in advance so we can give our shop dogs a heads-up—they always enjoy having extra guests around!

How Safe Is Rafting?

Safety is our highest priority. Statistically speaking, your drive to our location is more dangerous than rafting down our carefully monitored rivers. Before each trip, we provide thorough instruction, top-of-the-line safety equipment, and constant support from our experienced guides. Zoo Town Surfers boasts a perfect safety record, and while all outdoor activities come with some inherent risks, we work diligently to minimize them. A signed acknowledgment of risk and a liability release are required to ensure you are fully informed before you embark on your journey.

Do We Have to Paddle?

At Zoo Town Surfers, your river adventure is completely customizable. If you prefer to simply sit back and enjoy the scenic beauty without the physical exertion, our team is skilled in navigating the river without requiring you to paddle. On the other hand, if you’re up for some active team building or want to work on your paddling technique, we encourage you to join in. Your trip is tailored to your pace, comfort, and desired level of adventure.

Does Everyone Have to Know How to Swim?

Not necessarily—but we do take water safety very seriously. Each guest is provided with a Type V whitewater lifejacket that must be worn at all times. These lifejackets are designed to keep you afloat, even if you’re not actively swimming. Before setting off, we give a detailed demonstration on how to float and what steps to take if you fall out of the raft. With these precautions in place, you can relax and enjoy your adventure knowing that you’re well protected.

Can I Request A Guide?

Absolutely! Our guides are one of our greatest assets, and many of our repeat guests request their favorite guides time and time again. If you have a preferred guide, let us know, and we’ll do our best to accommodate your request.

Should I Tip My Guide?

Our guides work hard to ensure your trip is unforgettable. While they do not expect tips, any gratuity is always appreciated. If you enjoy your ride, a tip is a great way to show your appreciation for their dedication and service.

What Is Your Cancellation Policy?

Full payment is required upon booking. Cancellations made 48 hours or more before the scheduled trip will receive a full refund. Unfortunately, refunds will not be issued for cancellations made within 48 hours of departure. Zoo Town Surfers reserves the right to cancel a trip at any time if weather or river conditions are unsuitable or unsafe. Should this occur, you will be notified immediately and offered a full refund or an alternative booking arrangement.

FAQ: Do You Have Group Discounts?

Yes, we do! We offer a 10% discount for groups of 12 or more guests—saving you up to $8.00 per person. It’s a perfect way to share an adventure with friends or family while enjoying a cost-effective outing.

Are Full Day Lessons Structured to Individual Skill Levels?

Indeed, our full day lessons are customized based on your individual skill level. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to push your limits, our instructors tailor each lesson to ensure you get the most out of your experience.

What Is the Difference Between Class I and Class VI Rapids?

Rapids are classified on a scale that helps you understand what to expect:

  • Class I: Clear, wide channels with small waves—ideal for beginners.
  • Class II: Slightly larger, more frequent waves with minimal hazards.
  • Class III: Waves up to four feet high with some obstructions—requires basic maneuvering.
  • Class IV: Challenging rapids with large waves and obstructions demanding skillful maneuvering.
  • Class V: Intense and technical rapids with unavoidable large waves and numerous hazards.
  • Class VI: The upper limit, suitable only for expert, career risk takers who know exactly what they’re doing.
