ALBERTON GORGE
The Alberton Gorge of the Clark Fork River offers the best whitewater rafting in Western Montana. The gorge is lined with spectacular canyon walls, raptors, wildlife, and rapids. In early spring, the Alberton Gorge is a big water raft trip. As the water drops, the gorge becomes more defined and forms dozens of Class I-III rapids such as Triple Bridges, Boat Eater, Tumbleweed, and Davey Jones’s Locker. The gorge offers whitewater rafting all year long.

Our headquarters, Crystal Springs, overlooks the Alberton Gorge making last minute changes, shuttles, and river access simple and easy. Crystal Springs is an ideal location for post-float barbeques, family reunions, and company outings. Crystal Springs is fully equipped with hot/cold showers, clean bathrooms, horseshoes, warm/cold beverages, and a retail shop. Raft, kick back and relax, enjoy homemade salsa and a cold beverage on one of our decks overlooking the Alberton Gorge. Stop by and see us! We’re there every day, all summer long.
ALBERTON GORGE/CLARK FORK RIVER HISTORY
During the last ice age, from approximately 20,000 years ago, the Clark Fork Valley rested along the southern edge of the Cordilleran ice sheet covering western North America. The ice sheet advanced and formed and ice dam on the river, creating Glacial Lake Missoula which stretched through the Clark Fork Valley across central Montana. The periodic rupturing and rebuilding of the ice dam released the Missoula Floods, a series of catastrophic floods down the Clark Fork and Pend Oreille into the Columbia which sculptured many of the geographic features you see on the Alberton Gorge. The gorge has some of the oldest sedimentary rock in the world.
