OUR MOST POPULAR TRIP!
The beautiful Alberton Gorge of the Clark Fork River is Missoula’s crown jewel of whitewater, lined with spectacular canyon walls, wildlife, and rapids! This is a great trip for the whole family.
This section of river is filled with numerous Class I-III drops that offer excitement from May through August. The river can reach up to 40,000 CFS in May and early spring and is a big water run. As the water drops, the river becomes more defined and forms rapids such as Davey Jones’s Locker, Triple Bridges, Tumbleweed, Boat Eater and Fang. These exciting rapids will keep your attention between the easier pools lining the length of the canyon.
Due to the large volume nature of the Clark Fork and its streambed, you will always find enough water for a good time in the Alberton Gorge, even when other rivers in the surrounding area have long since dried up. The Gorge offers whitewater all year long!
HEADQUARTERS OVERLOOKS THE ALBERTON GORGE!
Our Crystal Springs headquarters, along the length of the canyon, is our base of operations and gives us the advantage of keeping an eye on the river’s action and beauty — right from our doorstep. We also offer the option of post-float barbeques perfect for family get-togethers or company outings. Crystal Springs is fully equipped with hot/cold showers, clean bathrooms, horseshoes, decks overlooking gorge, and a retail shop. Last minute changes are no big deal with our headquarters only 5 minutes from the put-in and take-out. Come visit us for a day of whitewater on the Gorge, we’re there every day, all summer long!
ALBERTON GORGE/CLARK FORK RIVER HISTORY
During the last ice age, from approximately 20,000 years ago, the Clark Fork Valley rested along the southern edge of the Cordilleran ice sheet covering western North America. The ice sheet advanced and formed an ice dam on the river, creating Glacial Lake Missoula which stretched through the Clark Fork Valley across central Montana. The periodic rupturing and rebuilding of the ice dam released the Missoula Floods, a series of catastrophic floods down the Clark Fork and Pend Oreille into the Columbia which sculptured many of the geographic features you see on the Alberton Gorge.
